Qualcomm prepares a new processor for "smart" watches

Today, one of the problems of the smart watch on Android Wear Wear OS is the outdated hardware stuffing. Most new models still use the Snapdragon Wear 2100 chip released the year before, and in the Tag Heuer luxury watches, even more ancient mobile "atoms" of Intel are installed. But in Qualcomm assure that soon the situation will change.

How it all began

Qualcomm's first platform for wearable devices was a modified version of the Snapdragon 400. In 2016, the Snapdragon Wear 2100 chip came on the market, but the 28-nanometer process technology affected the power consumption and size of the solution. The flagship (at that time) mobile processor Snapdragon 820, for example, was manufactured using 14-nanometer technology.

Next step

As noted by Pankaj Kedia, head of the direction of worn devices in Qualcomm, the third generation of SoC will create more compact devices. Chips will help solve another problem of a smart clock - a modest battery life. They will be much more economical to expend battery power in standby mode, and even with active use, power consumption will decrease. Finally, developers promise more effective interaction with built-in fitness gadget sensors.

When to expect?

The new Qualcomm chip and the first "smart" clock based on it are planned to be presented in the fall of 2018. Who will be the first partner of the company - is unknown.
