Tesla forced to ensure other companies' electric vehicles have access to Supercharge stations in order to get government subsidies

The US government plans to encourage companies to increase the number of charging stations for electric vehicles. The U.S. Department of Transportation will finalize the documents regulating the participation of companies in the subsidy programme.

Here's What We Know

The Joe Biden administration has developed a plan to combat climate change which envisages that by 2030 the proportion of electric cars in the USA will reach 50%. One of the barriers to achieving the goal is poor infrastructure.

A government subsidy programme, which would provide $7.5 billion to increase the number of charging stations in the country to 500,000, should solve this problem. As of 2021, there were approximately 100,000 stations in the US.

Tesla will have to give access to its Supercharge stations to other electric vehicles if it wants to take part in the government subsidy programme. Elon Musk's company claimed to be willing to do so, and its CEO discussed the issue with White House officials last month. However, nothing has changed since then. Supercharge is still only available to owners of Tesla electric cars.

Before the end of the month, the US Department of Transportation will unveil the requirements that American charging stations must meet in order for companies to qualify for the government subsidy programme. In particular, it will be about the share of US-made components.
