Ukrainian Armed Forces show rare video of NASAMS air defence system destroying more than 100 Russian missiles and drones

At the end of 2022, the Ukrainian Armed Forces received two batteries of NASAMS air defence systems from the USA. A few months later, the military showed a rare video of the foreign air defence system.

Here's What We Know

The US-Norwegian surface-to-air missile system underwent a baptism of fire in mid-November 2022. During the firing, NASAMS was able to hit 100% of its targets, destroying every one of the 10 Russian missiles that were in range. The launcher, which is shown in the video, shot down six cruise missiles.

According to the Ukrainian military, NASAMS shot down a total of over 100 missiles and drones in five months of operation. In the case of drones, we are talking about Iranian kamikaze drones Shahed-131 and Shahed-136.

The surface-to-air missile system is capable of detecting targets up to 120 km away. The system includes a radar with a computer that acts as a control console. Through a monitor, the military can monitor the airspace environment.

One NASAMS battery consists of three firing platoons with 2-3 launchers, a control room, an optical station and the AN/MPQ-64F1 Improved Sentinel radar. In early spring 2023, Norway promised to transfer two NASAMS platoons to Ukraine. In addition, Ukraine should receive six batteries of anti-aircraft missile systems from the USA and one from Canada.
