Expal develops 155mm shells with a range of up to 80km for the M109 self-propelled howitzer

Expal is working to increase the range of 155mm barrel artillery. The Spanish company is developing new projectiles.

Here's What We Know

Expal has announced that it has begun research to develop two types of ammunition: the Rocket Assisted Projectile (RAP) and the Velocity Enhanced Artillery Projectile (VLAP). The maximum range will be 60 km and 80 km respectively.

Both munitions will be based on the ER02A1 with a range of up to 40km. The projectile is in service with the Spanish Army. It is used by M109 self-propelled howitzers and SIAC 155/52 towed artillery units.

The RAP will be equipped with a jet engine, while the VLAP will have a gas generator to extend the range to 80 km. In addition to the M109 and SIAC 155/52, the new ammunition will also hit targets in the naval artillery units.
