App Store updates age categories: 13+, 16+ and 18+ instead of the usual ratings
Apple has made an important change to the App Store's age rating system.
Instead of four categories (4+, 9+, 12+ and 17), there will now be six, which will allow for a more detailed delineation of objectionable content for all of these ages.
Here's What We Know
In iOS 26, macOS 26, and other new versions of Apple's operating systems, the 12+ and 17+ categories have been replaced by three new categories - 13+, 16+, and 18+.
The 13+ apps are allowed to mention alcohol or mild nudity, the 16+ category allows adult themes and free access to online features, and the 18+ category allows realistic depictions of violence and gambling.
All app developers must complete the new questionnaire by 31 January 2026, otherwise they will lose the ability to update them on the App Store.
Apps without a rating cannot be submitted to the App Store, but their distribution is allowed through alternative services and sites in the EU.
The system is already in beta testing and will be launched in the autumn.
