The U.S. has sent its most advanced stealth destroyer USS Zumwalt to the coast of China to assess the possibility of deploying hypersonic missiles in the region
Following the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, which is taking part in joint exercises of the United States and South Korea, Washington sent another warship to Asia. The stealth destroyer USS Zumwalt has headed for the coast of China.
Here's What We Know
USS Zumwalt is the United States Navy's first multipurpose guided-missile destroyer. By moving the stealth destroyer to the western Pacific, the United States wants to demonstrate the power of its fleet. With an intermediate stop on the island of Guam, the warship arrived in Japan on September 26.
The USS Zumwalt is now virtually unarmed. Its trip to East Asia was justified by the need to assess the possibility of deploying hypersonic missiles in the region. At the same time the United States will be able to demonstrate its flag off the coast of the People's Republic of China.
In 2023 the USA will start modernization of the destroyer. It will receive Common Supersonic Glide Body System, which will allow USS Zumwalt to launch hypersonic missiles with the speed of almost 21,000 km/h.
