La nuova era della DC: quando e dove inizia l'universo di James Gunn - progetti, personaggi e film
The DC Universe cinematic DC Universe is gearing up for a big screen relaunch under the direction of James Gunn and Peter Safran. A whole collection of new projects were unveiled in early 2023, each part of a new timeline and only some characters from the existing DCEU will continue on. So where will the DC Universe relaunch begin?
Here's What We Know
The last film in the current DCEU will be Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which effectively closes the doors of the old universe.
Gunn is now set to start fresh with a full slate of projects combined into a phase called "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters," where some of the franchise's biggest heroes and villains will see changes and re-casting, as well as exciting new storylines.
And so, the first film in the DC Universe is named - "Superman: Legacy".
First of all, James Gunn officially announced that "Superman: Legacy", which will be released in 2025, will be the first DCU film to launch the new universe by starting its story with one of DC's key characters.
Gunn also confirmed that "Legacy" will not be a typical origin story for Kal-El/Clark Kent, and the project will not be about the origin of the universe as a whole.
The plot is being kept largely a secret, all we know is that it will be about a young Superman trying to adapt his Kryptonian origins to human life in Kansas.
David Corenswet will play the role of Clark Kent, while Rachel Brosnahan will play the character of Lois Lane, whom Kal-El is already familiar with. In addition, Nathan Fillion will play the role of Green Lantern, Isabela Merced will play the role of Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi will play Mr Terrific and Anthony Carrigan will play the role of Metamorpho.
In turn, the first DC Universe series will be Creatures Commandos.
The animated series will be released even earlier than "Superman: Legacy" - in 2024, so it can be considered that it will open a new world of DC.
The show will be released on the Max platform and exist in the same continuum as DC's upcoming live-action projects, which was uncharacteristic of the DCEU.
The Creatures Commandos series is set in the modern era and tells the story of a secret team of monsters led by Task Force X's Amanda Waller.
The team includes Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr, Indira Varma as Bride of Frankenstein, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr Phosphorus, Sean Gunn as G. I. Robot and Vizsla as G. I. Robot.I. Robot and Weasel, and Steve Agee will embody John Economos.
Furthermore, each of these actors may later play their characters in live-action in future projects.
The first DC Universe character to be named has already debuted on screens this year - Blue Beetle.
While we wait for the release of Superman: Legacy and Creatures Commandos, James Gunn has confirmed that Jaime Reyes' Blue Beetle is the first DCU character.
The film, which was released in August 2023, introduced viewers to Jaime and his family. The guy faces an unexpected superhero status after being contacted by an intelligent alien.
Blue Beetle has virtually no connection to the rest of the DCEU, so he could easily be moved into the new DCU given the character's popularity and positive reception to the new film.
Similarly, it's also possible that Jason Momoa as Aquaman will continue his story in the new DCU, given the insular nature of the films about the character.
