AFU receives programmable detonation ammunition, but the feature does not work on Leopard 2A6 tanks

Countries that send military aid to Ukraine do not disclose the nomenclature of the ammunition transferred. Therefore, we find out about the shells used by the Armed Forces with a delay thanks to photos and videos published by the Ukrainian military.

Here's What We Know

An interesting video footage was published on social media a few days ago. It shows that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have received DM 11 ammunition with programmable detonation for German Leopard 2A6 tanks.

In the screenshot above you can see the process of loading the DM 11, aka Rh31, high-explosive projectile. The ammunition has a 120mm calibre and was developed by Defense Munitions International.

The programmable projectile can operate in delayed, non-delayed and airburst mode when it reaches a predetermined point. The first option allows for the destruction of targets in cover; the second is designed for direct-guided strikes; the third enables effective elimination of live forces in open terrain.

It all sounds good, but there's a caveat that prevents the DM 11 from achieving its full potential. Programmable detonation requires the use of special electronics. It appeared in the Rh-120 L55A1 gun, which is used in modern versions of the Leopard 2, starting with the 2A7 (pictured above). The Ukrainian army has Leopard 2A4 and 2A6 tanks in service.
