The US Air Force's Tyndall Air Force Base has received its first group of fifth-generation F-35A Lightning II fighter jets. The warplanes arrived in Florida as part of a programme to modernise the US Air Force's capabilities to achieve air supremacy.

Here's What We Know

Tyndall is ready to transition from a training mission to the formation of a combat-ready fighter wing consisting of fifth-generation aircraft. On 1 August, three F-35A Lightning II fighter jets landed at the Florida air base.

Their arrival marks a new chapter in the life of the US Air Force base. This was announced by Colonel George Watkins, commander of the 325th Fighter Wing. He said the F-35As improve the lethality and combat readiness of the US Air Force, which is consistent with the goals of the national defence strategy.

Once all the fighters are operational, they will take part in an exercise aimed at improving interoperability between the fourth- and fifth-generation aircraft.
