Strange story: Ubisoft takes The Crew (2014) away from gamers without refunds, with servers already down

Ubisoft recently shut down The Crew's servers, with the game becoming unavailable not only in network mode, but also in single-player mode.

Yesterday we reported that one of the users PlayStation shop returned $ 94.99 for the racing game The Crew, bought nine years ago. In the piece we wondered whether this was a precedent or a one-time fluke, and as the new day has shown, it looks like it's a one-time fluke after all.

Here's What We Know

Reddit users are reporting that Ubisoft hasn't stopped at shutting down servers and has begun revoking licences for the once-purchased game. This action makes it impossible for enthusiasts to create fan-made servers for The Crew, which could have allowed the 2014 racing game to continue to be played.

According to German website Haise Online, an anti-piracy group has contacted the European Commission to ask whether the French corporation's actions are legal in terms of legislation. And Ubisoft itself does not comment on the situation and the reason for such a radical decision, which is perplexing: the purchased game is taken away, but the money for it is not returned.

By the way, The Crew was withdrawn from all digital shops back in December 2023.
