Meta's oversight board will review instances of AI being used to create explicit images

Meta's oversight board has taken up two cases involving the use of artificial intelligence to create explicit images of public figures. The board wants to evaluate the effectiveness of Meta's moderation policies and practices regarding such content.

Here's What We Know

One case concerns an Instagram post featuring an AI-generated image of a nude Indian woman. It was posted by an account that only publishes such content. Although the post was removed after the user complained, his appeal was also not considered.

The second case relates to a Facebook group post that showed an "AI-generated nude woman" with a caption referring to an "American public figure." The post was removed by an automatic moderation tool, but the author appealed the decision.

The oversight board has decided to review both cases to assess whether Meta is fairly protecting women around the world from such AI-generated content. The board is asking for public comment for a fortnight and plans to publish its decision and recommendations for Meta's policies soon.

The Oversight Board has previously influenced the company's policy on AI-generated content, such as after the Joe Biden video incident. As a result, Meta agreed to label more such AI content on its platforms.
