Snapdragon 8 Gen 4: a huge leap in performance, but won't beat Apple's A18 Pro

According to the latest rumours, Qualcomm's next flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, promises a significant performance boost over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. But will these results be enough to beat Apple's A18 Pro chip!

Here's What We Know

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to utilise proprietary Arm cores developed by Qualcomm itself. The new chip is rumoured to have two large cores and six medium cores, and will be based on TSMC's 3-nanometer process technology. Qualcomm previously confirmed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be unveiled in October, and Xiaomi is rumoured to be the first company to release a phone using the chip.

While most reports suggest that the new chip will perform significantly better in benchmarks than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, results from an engineering sample suggest that it might not be that big of a leap.

However, Chinese whistleblower Digital Chat Station has reassured the public by claiming that the engineering prototype was running a low-frequency version of the chip. He claims that the cores in the latest version of the chip run at frequencies between 3.6GHz and 4.0GHz.

According to his data, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 scored around 2,700 points in the single-core test and 10,000 points in the multi-core test. This is a significant improvement over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3-powered Galaxy S24 Ultra's scores of 2187 and 6669 points respectively. However, it still doesn't surpass the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which scored 2958 and 7288 respectively.

Therefore, there are doubts about the rumours that indicated that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be faster than the A18 Pro chip that will be used in the next generation of iPhones.

However, Qualcomm probably still has some recent improvements for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, so these numbers could get better in the coming months.
