Waymo receives permission to operate its robotaxi service in Los Angeles

Alphabet-owned Waymo has received permission from the CPUC to launch its robot taxis in Los Angeles. Now they can transport passengers without a driver in certain parts of the city and on the San Francisco peninsula.

Here's What We Know

In its decision, the CPUC noted that it had received letters of protest from local agencies such as the city of South San Francisco and San Mateo County, but nevertheless allowed Waymo to start operating. This decision opens up the possibility for the company to charge passengers for robotaxi rides.

Recently, Waymo has received criticism for problems with its cars' software, but they have reported fixing their mistakes. The mayor of Los Angeles and other local officials have expressed concern over the decision to allow autonomous cars into the city. However, a Waymo spokesperson promised that the company would work closely with local authorities and communities.
