German companies MBDA Deutschland and Rheinmetall have tested a combat laser. The system was installed on board the frigate Sachsen.

Here's What We Know

The press release states that the laser weapon demonstrator was tested in challenging scenarios under realistic operating conditions. Rheinmetall claims that the combat laser is capable of dealing with different types of threats.

The demonstrator performed a hundred test firings while installed aboard the German frigate Sachsen. The programme lasted for a year. Tests of the system confirmed the laser weapon's ability to destroy targets in a maritime environment.

The next stage of the project involves the development of an operational laser weapon system. German specialists intend to use the experience gained to minimise risk as much as possible. After detailed testing, the laser weapon demonstrator will be sent to the Bundeswehr Technical Centre 91.
