Apple can teach AirPods to recognize the owner ... by the shape of the ears!
Modern smartphones, tablets and laptops are already able to recognize the owner by fingerprint or face, and now Apple has figured out how to implement this feature in headphones.
Is that allowed?
The new patent indicates that Apple is considering adding biometric identification to future AirPods. This document describes two possible ways AirPods can verify your identity.
So, the first way is to use ultrasonic signals as a kind of sonar (a means of sound detection of underwater objects using acoustic radiation) to determine the shape of the ear canal.
“For example, different characteristics of the user's ear create an echo of the ultrasound signal that is unique to the user. Changes in the surface of the user's ear canal can cause the ultrasound signal to bounce off the surface and generate echo, characteristic of the user, ”explains the source.
The second way sounds even more confusing. For example, AirPods can use the movement data from your iPhone and/or Apple Watch to get an idea of how you walk - your walk - and use this to verify your identity. In this case, indicators such as step size, pace can be taken into account. etc. The information obtained can be further compared with reference gait information.
True, so far this is just a patent, and it is not known whether this idea will be brought to life. But this idea is not without meaning, since, having received AirPods connected to a smartphone, an outsider can access personal information and give commands to Siri.
