Total sales of Metal Gear games reached 58 million, but the future of the series is shrouded in fog

Konami has updated the total worldwide sales figures for the Metal Gear franchise, and as of the end of December 2021, the series has sold 58 million copies throughout its lifetime.

Konami recently removed Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 from digital storefronts due to license expiration. According to the publisher, this is a temporary measure until the problem is resolved, but at the moment there have been no updates on this matter (the games were removed last November).

The series will be celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, but Konami has been fairly quiet, though the company said last May that it was "in deep development on a number of key projects."
