Netflix has announced a collaboration with 2K and Take-Two Interactive to create a live-action adaptation of the popular game franchise BioShock. Although no screenwriter or director has been announced as part of the project, The Hollywood Reporter  reports that this partnership has been going on for almost a year.

Netflix tweeted that the film is an adaptation of the BioShock franchise, suggesting that it could feature characters and locations from the underwater city of Rapture from BioShock 1 and 2, as well as the sky city of Columbia from BioShock Infinite.

“Netflix is one of the best and most forward-thinking storytellers in the entire entertainment industry today,” said Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive. “We are thrilled that they share our vision and commitment to the BioShock franchise, loved by millions of fans around the world. Studio 2K Cloud Chamber is actively working on the continuation of the series, and combined with our partnership with Netflix, we remain confident that BioShock will continue to captivate and engage audiences like never before.”

At one point, Universal had the rights to make a BioShock movie and Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski was brought on board, but it was ultimately cancelled.
