The analytical company Canalys summed up the results of the first quarter of 2022 in the global smartphone market.

What's new?

From year to year, Samsung’s leadership remains unchanged: the share of the South Korean manufacturer in the first quarter was 24%, an increase of 2% compared to the same period in 2021. Samsung has ramped up production of its popular A-series to compete aggressively in the mid-range and budget segments, and updated its 2022 portfolio to include the flagship Galaxy S22 series, analysts said.

Apple follows with a share of 18%. “Apple came in second with strong first-quarter performance driven by growing demand for the iPhone 13 series. While the iPhone 13 series continues to drive consumer demand, the new iPhone SE, released in March, is emerging as an important driver of average sales for Apple.” according to the Canalys report.

Third place with 13% is occupied by Xiaomi, mainly due to the success of the Redmi Note series. OPPO (including OnePlus) and vivo round out the top five with 10% and 8% shares.

In addition, it is reported that global shipments of smartphones fell by 11% due to adverse factors, including the pandemic. “Sellers are facing significant uncertainty due to the Russian-Ukrainian war, ongoing lockdowns in China and the threat of inflation. All this was added to the traditionally low seasonal demand. Suppliers must prepare to respond quickly to emerging opportunities and risks without detracting from their long-term strategic plans. The good news is that painful component shortages may resolve sooner than expected, which will certainly help ease cost pressures.
