Apple, Google and Microsoft to phase out passwords next year

Apple, Google, and Microsoft announced they are expanding support for the passwordless login standard created by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium.

What does it mean?

The new standard provides access to applications and websites without using a password. Instead, more convenient methods will be offered: fingerprints, face recognition or device PIN.

Passwordless login will protect users from phishing, and the process itself will become more secure compared to passwords, multi-factor authentication and one-time SMS passwords.

“Password-only authentication is one of the biggest security issues on the internet, and managing so many passwords is tedious for consumers, often resulting in them reusing the same passwords across services. This practice can lead to account hijacking, data leakage, and even identity theft,” explains the FIDO Alliance.
