Apple discontinues the iPod touch, the last remaining iPod

Apple announced today that the iPod touch and the entire iPod line will be discontinued. Apple’s acclaimed line of media players, the iPod touch, was its last model. The company has said that the product will be available while supplies last.

Launched over two decades ago, the iPod followed in the Walkman’s footsteps and re-revolutionized the way people listened to music. Many great Apple products have been part of the series, such as the iPod nano and the iPod Shuffle.

The original iPod touch was launched back in 2007, the same year as the first iPhone. It had mostly the same hardware and software as the original iPhone, minus the parts that made phone calls.

Since then the iPod touch has undergone many changes. The latest model was released almost exactly three years ago in 2019, although it was mostly similar to the model that came before it.

It’s not surprising that this iconic product is ending. The writing has been on the wall for dedicated audio player for some time now, killed like many other product categories by the smartphone.

It’s a surprise that it took this long for Apple to discontinue the iPod touch as the company had clearly lost interest in updating it a while back. The sales must have evaporated a very many years ago, as did any interest around the brand. The brand must have become too costly or impossible to continue making.

Apple doesn’t seem too upset about the iPod being discontinued. The company is happy to direct you towards its many other products that can now play music. Most of these products don’t come with a headset jack.

Needless to say, the iPod will always have a special place in our hearts. Thanks for the Phish.
