Google held the I/O 2022 developer conference yesterday, where it unexpectedly introduced a lot of new hardware. The first novelty was the Pixel 6a smartphone.

What is known

As the name suggests, this is a simplified version of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The smartphone has a similar appearance, but instead of metal and glass, the novelty received an aluminum frame and a plastic panel. The smartphone is equipped with a 6.1-inch OLED display. It has FHD+ resolution, a standard 60Hz refresh rate and a hole in the center for the front camera on 8 MP (Sony IMX355). The main one, in turn, received two sensors of 12.2 MP each. The first has a Sony IMX363 module, and the second has a Sony IMX386. That is, the camera is different from the top models Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, which come with a 50 MP main module (Samsung ISOCELL GN1). However, it supports all the same branded features, including Night Sight.

As for performance, the exact same Tensor chip as in older models is responsible for it. The SoC comes paired with 6GB LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB UFS 3.1 storage. The Pixel 6a is powered by a 4306 mAh battery. It supports fast charging. According to the company, the novelty will live on a single charge with the Extreme Battery Saver mode turned on for up to 72 hours. Naturally, the Android 12 operating system is installed in the device out of the box. The novelty will receive 3 years of OS updates and 5 years of security patch updates.

Price and when to expect

The Pixel 6a will go on sale on July 21st. The smartphone will cost $449.
