Spotify is now adding a potentially major text-to-speech upgrade to its string of recent acquisitions. Spotify is buying Sonantic, a startup that uses artificial intelligence to create "stunningly realistic" voices from text. While Spotify didn't provide many details about the acquisition, it did hint at several potential upgrades.

Even though you aren't looking at your screen, Spotify claims that Sonantic's technology may provide context for future suggestions. The AI voice platform could also improve access to new audio experiences. This might aid accessibility by allowing users with visual impairments to more easily navigate Spotify.

Spotify didn't give a timetable for the completion of the transaction. However, it makes sense in light of broader trends. Social networking platforms such as Instagram and TikTok already employ text-to-speech for automated voiceovers. Spotify could have a better chance of luring listeners accustomed to finding music on social media if you add Meld's TikTok-style discovery feed to the mix.
