Microsoft is gradually closing public access to a number of artificial intelligence-based facial analysis tools, including one that identifies a subject's emotions from videos and photographs.

Such "emotion recognition" tools have been criticized by experts. They say that facial expressions, which are considered universal, differ from different groups of the population, but also unscientifically identify external manifestations of emotions with internal feelings.

"They may recognize a frown, but it's not the same as detecting anger." - Lisa Feldman Barrett, Professor of Psychology, Northeastern University

This decision is part of a review of ethical policies Microsoft in the field of artificial intelligence. The company's updated standards of responsible artificial intelligence emphasize accountability to find out who uses its memories and to strengthen human oversight of where these tools are used.

In practice, this means that Microsoft restrict access to your face recognition features and completely remove others. Users will have to apply for use Azure Face to identify a person, for example, to report Microsofthow and where they will deploy their systems. Some uses with less harmful potential will remain open.

In addition to removing shared access to your emotion recognition tool, Microsoft also refuses the opportunity Azure Face identify "attributes such as gender, age, smile, facial hair, and makeup."
