Baidu's most recent robotaxi has a detachable steering wheel
Automakers are frequently eager to show off self-driving concept vehicles without steering wheels, but Baidu is close to bringing one like this into actuality. The tech giant has introduced a new robotaxi, the Apollo RT6, with a detachable steering wheel. This option allows ride-hailing businesses to provide more room for passengers – such as extra seats, work desks, or even gaming consoles.
Baidu's most cutting-edge autonomous driving technology is found in the RT6. To navigate complicated urban settings, the Level 4 system (full self-driving under specific circumstances) employs a total of 38 sensors, including eight LiDAR sensors and 12 cameras. The manufacturer didn't reveal range for the all-electric design; however, the flat floor, sliding doors, and "interactive" lights should make your journey more pleasurable.
The automobile is also suitable for mass production. The car will cost firms in China $37,000, and it will first be used by Baidu's Apollo Go service in 2023. The relatively low price will allow the firm to deploy "tens of thousands" of taxis across China, and it sees a future where robotaxi fares are half as expensive as personal vehicle transportation. While this isn't good news for taxi drivers, it suggests that driverless ride hailing may be readily available throughout the nation soon.
