A jealousy British man went to jail for spying on his ex using Apple's AirTag
With the release of the Apple AirTag, more and more reports began to appear online about the tags being used to commit crimes. That's why Apple has taken measures to protect against covert surveillance: first, iPhones automatically alert when someone else's AirTag is nearby, and second, the tracker itself makes a sound when it moves away from its owner for a while. Nevertheless, that doesn't stop not-so-smart jealous people from using the Apple AirTag for their own purposes, as was the case with the British man called Christopher Paul Trotman.
What happened?
The 41-year-old man had been in a relationship with a woman for 10 years, but she eventually left him because of his excessive desire to control her life. But even after the breakup, he pestered his ex with constant phone calls and questions.
Thereafter, Christopher ordered an AirTag from Amazon and attached the tracker to his ex-lover's car to track her movements. He even wrote her a text message accusing her of having affairs with other men. He also asked her if she had enjoyed that night on Penderry Road in Swansea, but she had no idea how he knew where she was.
As it turned out, the woman had received an alert on her iPhone about an AirTag nearby, but didn't understand what it was about and ignored the message. Later, a similar notification arrived on her daughter's smartphone, and they had already found the tracking tag. Police quickly found out that it was connected to Trotman's smartphone.
In the wake of the incident, the police were able to find out that it was connected to the smartphone.
As a result, the jealous man spent more than nine weeks in a jail and was also served with a court order prohibiting any contact with his ex.
