Following the $36-50 million Su-34 fighter jet, the Su-25SM attack aircraft was shot down in the skies over Kharkiv region. It costs several times less than the fighter jet, about $10 million. The attack aircraft was used by the Russian army to cover ground troops during retreats.
The Su-25SM is an upgrade of the Soviet subsonic warplane, which appeared in the 1980s. The Russian government was supposed to replace the Su-25 with the Su-34, but that moment was constantly delayed by the release of various upgrades, including the SM.
The attack aircraft has many disadvantages. For example, most of the guided missiles, which can be equipped with the aircraft, have a launch range of about 10 km. In this regard, to strike the Su-25SM one must enter the zone of air defense defeat.
