The U.S. International Trade Commission has opened an investigation into the South Korean company Samsung, which is accused of patent infringement.

Here's What We Know

The complainant was U.S. outdoor advertising display manufacturer Manufacturing Resources International (MRI). The Atlanta-based company filed a complaint with the regulator alleging that Samsung Electronics violated five patents.

MRI claims that the South Korean manufacturer is using someone else's technology to develop displays that are used indoors and outdoors to broadcast ads. Separately, it is worth noting that in recent years, Samsung has managed to dramatically increase the production of panels for advertising. In particular, the company is helping with the design of Hollywood Park and the modernization of the New Yor Mets stadium.

MRI is demanding that the U.S. International Trade Commission ban the sale of products that infringe patents. It will take some time before we know what the regulator decides, because investigations into such incidents often drag on for years, during which time the parties usually agree among themselves not to take the case to court.
