Striking Distance's technical director Mark James has revealed many details about the artificial intelligence of enemies in The Callisto Protocol. In an interview with vg247, it became known that the monsters in the game tend to scare first and then attack. Also in the game, opponents will study the player's style and adapt to it.

Here's What We Know

In this article, we decided to retell the most important things from James' interview for vg247. A lot of attention was paid to artificial intelligence in the game:

"We have amazing AI. Our AI will sometimes make the decision not to attack you. It will instead jump into a vent in front of you – making sure you see it happen – so you now know that an enemy is in there, and it’s just waiting for the next time it can pop out of another vent and attack you"

Artificial intelligence will analyze the player's style throughout the game to make it more difficult and scary:

"The AI is always finding the best way to attack. Sometimes that’s them trying to get closer to you. Sometimes they’re reacting to the way they’re playing to better take advantage of you. Let's say, for example, you keep using long-range ballistics – the enemy will move out of your line of sight, probably into a vent, and find another way to come to you"

In the game there is a virus that turns people into infected, to kill such monsters you need to shoot in special areas. If you miss, the mutation becomes even stronger:

"If you shoot at them, and miss the area you need to hit… you will decrease that timer more, and you will make them more aggressive. So you better make sure that one shot is good. Otherwise, they’re going to mutate quicker – and that makes them more powerful, it makes them faster, it makes them harder to kill. What you could have killed in one shot will now take you four".

According to the developer, we can really expect advanced artificial intelligence in the game, which will further increase the atmosphere and tension. All this can make The Callisto Protocol one of the scariest games in recent years.

Flashback

The Callisto Protocol is a third-person survival horror. The player will take on the role of Jacob Lee, a victim thrown into Black Iron Prison, a maximum security prison located on Jupiter's moon, Callisto. When the inmates begin to transform into monstrous creatures, chaos engulfs the prison. To survive, Jacob must make his way to safety to escape the prison, while uncovering the dark and disturbing secrets buried beneath Callisto's surface. The game is developed by the creators of Dead Space, so you should not worry about the horror elements of the game.

When We Can Expect It

The Callisto Protocol is scheduled for release on December 2, 2022 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC.
