Ukraine wants ATACMS ballistic missiles to destroy Iranian drone bases in Crimea
Ukraine continues to seek operational-tactical surface-to-air ballistic missiles ATACMS for HIMARS multiple-launch rocket systems.
Here's What We Know
According to the Wall Street Journal, Ukrainian officials have developed another proposal for the United States. Earlier, we wrote that Ukraine wanted ATACMS on condition that targets are agreed upon with Washington. The new proposal is that the Ukrainian Armed Forces would use ballistic missiles to strike Iranian drone bases in Crimea.
This was reported to the Wall Street Journal by congressional representatives. Note that the United States banned the use of HIMARS to attack Russian territory, but Crimea is legally considered a Ukrainian peninsula, which was occupied by the Russian Federation in 2014. Despite this, however, there is not a full consensus in the U.S. government on whether to allow the use of U.S. weapons for strikes on Crimea.
According to the White House, the use of long-range missiles could escalate, making the U.S. a party to the conflict and pushing Russia to use nuclear weapons. The same is said in the West about deliveries of fighter jets and tanks. We would remind you that ATACMS can hit targets at a distance of up to 300 km.
