The reason for the development of The Last of Us Part I was Naughty Dog's desire to maximize the game's potential. TV adaptation on HBO Max has nothing to do with it

Axios journalist Stephen Totilo tweeted details about his conversation with PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst about the remake of The Last of Us Part I and the game's TV adaptation on HBO Max.

Here's What We Know

Hulst said that The Last of Us 2013 was a bit ahead of its time in terms of creative vision, despite the limitations of technology at the time. The idea to create The Last of Us Part I is due to the developers' desire to make the most complete (definitive) version of the game.

As for The Last of Us series on HBO, which is to be released in 2023, it was not the only or even the main reason for creating a remake of the game.

In general, there is a theory among fans of The Last of Us that the remake was needed so that new developers who came to Naughty Dog could test the company's game engine, join the workflow and feel the atmosphere inside the studio. Also, if you recall, in recent years Naughty Dog has always made one big game, and the next one is smaller. For example, first came The Last of Us, and then the DLC Left Behind. And after the large-scale Uncharted 4 we were waiting for a small Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. So really, the remake of the original The Last of Us is more connected with the situation inside the studio, and not with the series on the game. Although one does not interfere with the other.

Flashback

The Last of Us is a game from NaughtyDog that was released in 2013. In 2020, MetaCritic users recognized Sony's exclusive as "the best of the decade". The TV adaptation of the game is being developed by Neil Druckmann, the creative director of The Last of Us series, as an executive producer and co-writer of the TV show, and Craig Mazin, who directed the Chernobyl series for HBO, is also a writer and executive producer. The plot of the first season will tell the events of the first part of the game with a diverse expansion of the universe.
