Unpacked, factory-wrapped first-generation iPhone sold at auction for nearly $40,000
At an auction LCG Auction sold the original first-generation iPhone, released in 2007.
Here's What We Know
An iPhone with 8GB of memory (not RAM) went on sale 15 years ago for $599. Adjusted for inflation, that's about $860, but the smartphone paid dozens of times more at auction.
For a very long time, the biggest offer was $10,446. However, buyers stepped up closer to the end of the auction. A collector who offered $39,339.60 for the original iPhone won.
The first-generation iPhone was not only available with 8GB of storage. The model was equipped with 4GB or 16GB of storage. Today's Apple smartphones in the basic modification offer users a 32 GB of storage and 6 GB of RAM. The original model did not have an application store and served as an iPod music player with Internet access and the ability to make calls.
