YouTube has finished testing 4K video as a premium feature

YouTube ended the experiment that blocked the ability to watch 4K video for non-Premium users. Earlier this month, the company published several tweets (which have since been deleted) saying that some of the platform's users had been selected to test the "Premium & non Premium" feature, and asked users for feedback on the idea.

Here's What We Know

The idea of having to pay for better video quality seemed controversial: some users called it a sign of platform decline, while some thought it was understandable, given the resources that are spent on storing and playing such content. The company has now said in a reply to one user that it is closing the experiment and bringing back the ability to watch videos in high resolution, but that does not mean that it cannot reinstate such a restriction again in the future.

It is not yet clear what the scope of the experiment was and what the results were, but we can expect that it could be repeated again in the near future as the cost of storage innocently increases.
