Apple's marketing director confirmed that the company will abandon Lightning in favor of USB-C in the iPhone
Apple will still have to abandon the proprietary Lightning connector in favor of a symmetrical USB-C port in the iPhone.
Here's What We Know
The European Union requires all smartphones sold in Europe to be equipped with a unified USB Type-C connector. Changes in legislation are forcing Apple to abandon the proprietary Lightning port.
Earlier talks about replacing Lightning with USB-C were conducted at an unofficial level. But now this information is confirmed by Apple itself in the person of the head of marketing Greg Joswiak. The marketing director confirmed that the company has to comply with the new rules of the European Union. According to the updated EU policy, all electronics sold in the region must move to a unified USB-C standard by the end of 2024.
At the same time Josviak reminded that at one time the authorities demanded from Apple to start using micro-USB port in its devices. This eventually led to the emergence of Lightning and USB-C. Had the American company agreed to switch to micro-USB, we would now have neither the former nor the latter.
