Earlier than planned: the U.S. will transfer modernized B61-12 aviation nuclear bombs to Europe in December
The United States has decided to accelerate the deployment of its modernized aviation nuclear bombs in Europe.
Here's What We Know
This was reported by the publication Politico, citing its sources. We are talking about bombs B61-12. They were originally planned to be flown to Europe in the spring of 2023, but because of Russia's threats to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, the US decided to send them to NATO allies in December of this year.
Flashback
The B61 is a thermonuclear bomb. It is the main nuclear weapon of the U.S. strategic nuclear forces. As for the B61-12, this is its current modification. It was first tested in 2015. It has a 50-kiloton warhead and boasts guided tail rudders. They make the B61-12 much more accurate than its predecessors. No brake parachute is needed to use it.
