Northrop Grumman installs MESA sensor on British E-7 Wedgetail aircraft

The U.S. company Northrop Grumman began equipping British aircraft with the MESA sensor with the E-7 Wedgetail airborne surveillance and guidance system.

The British Royal Air Force press office said the installation of the multi-purpose, electronically scanned sensor is a demonstration of progress toward the aircraft's "phenomenal capabilities." The MESA sensor is mounted in a distinctive fin that sits at the rear of the aircraft's spine.

The multi-purpose radar system allows the aircraft to detect and identify targets at long distances. The crew will have enhanced capabilities to track sea and airborne targets.

The E-7 Wedgetail aircraft is in service with the 8th Air Force Squadron at Lossiemouth air base of the Royal British Air Force. Northrop Grumman will equip two more aircraft with the MESA multi-purpose sensor in the future.
