Waymo launched a robot cab service in Phoenix
Waymo, which is owned by Alphabet holding company, has announced the full launch of its unmanned cab service in Phoenix.
Here's What We Know
For now, the Waymo One service has a modest geography. Only residents of the central districts of the capital of Arizona can use the services of robotic cars. But now it is available to anyone who has the Waymo One app, not just participants in the pre-trial program.
The company has been working for several years to get regulatory approval to launch the service in central Phoenix. Tests of unmanned cabs in the suburbs began back in 2017.
Regular obstacles have hampered Waymo One's launch in other states as well. For example, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) does not allow the company to charge customers for robotic cab rides. But the service Waymo One may soon appear in San Francisco, as the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) approved the relevant application of the company.
