Tesla Model Y in China "went crazy" and caused the death of two people - the braking system is to blame for the car accident, and the company promises to assist in the investigation
A Tesla Model Y electric car in China's Guangdong Province caused a car accident in which two people lost their lives.
Here's What We Know
The incident involving the Tesla car occurred on November 5. Surveillance video showed the car trying to park, then accelerating sharply and starting to rush at high speed on a two-lane road.
Along the way, the Model Y was rearranging itself between lanes, as well as hitting other cars, motorcycles and bicycles. At the end of its route of more than 2.5 km, the car crashed into a storefront.
The driver of the Model Y was 55 years old. He survived but sustained several injuries. He had problems with the brakes. This was reported by a family member of the driver. Tesla stated that the brake pedal was not used during the incident, as evidenced by the logs received from the car's onboard computer. However, it can be seen in the video that the brake lights in the Model Y briefly came on. Now the investigation of the automobile accident is under way, and the American manufacturer promises all possible assistance.
Note that the company of Elon Musk has been accused of failures of electric cars several times. Moreover, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NTHSA) states that the driver was to blame for all such acceleration, not the vehicle's automatics. The regulator also notes that there are 16,000 accidents every year in the United States due to drivers confusing gas and brake pedals.
