Tabs in Explorer were tested in Windows 95
I think hardly anyone will argue with the fact that tabs in browsers or Explorer are extremely convenient. But when exactly do you think they appeared? It turns out that Microsoft was testing them in Windows 95 long before they appeared in all browsers.
This information was shared by the YouTube channel Windows on Windows in its video. There we see a footage of tabs in Windows Explorer (yes, they were planned in Windows 95!) in an early build of Windows 95 from 1993. As you can see from the video, tabs served as quick links to recent folders.
Tabbed browsing in Windows came when Internet Explorer 7 was released in 2006 for Windows XP and Windows Vista the same year. However, Mozilla had already introduced tabs in its Firefox browser in 2003.
Why did Microsoft wait so long to introduce tabs in File Explorer? Perhaps this feature was too far ahead of its time and the general public was not ready for this level of performance. Maybe the processing power required to navigate between multiple jpg folders was too much. We will probably never know the truth.
