India tests Agni-V intercontinental ballistic missile that can carry a nuclear warhead

India has tested one of the five Agni missiles amid tensions on the border with China.

India has five modifications of the Agni. The missile with the longest launch range took part in the test. It is called Agni-V, has three stages, can hit targets up to 5,400 km away and is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.

The ballistic missile was launched from Abdul Kalam Island. The day before, Indian authorities had closed the airspace over the Bay of Bengal.

In addition to the Agni-V, the lineup includes four lesser-range missiles. As you might have guessed, they are called Agni-I, Agni-II, Agni-III and Agni-IV. The maximum launch range is 1,200 km, 3,500 km, 5,000 km and 4,000 km respectively. All of them are medium-range ballistic missiles.

India is also working on two more missiles: Agni-P (Prime) and Agni-VI. The first will be able to hit targets up to 2,000 km, and the second up to 12,000 km. Agni-VI will be the second intercontinental ballistic missile.
