Apple fixed the problem of false positives in Crash Detection in iOS 16.2 firmware. But it didn't help.

Here's What We Know

The problematic feature was encountered by skiers. As it turns out, falls during downhill skiing are treated by Apple's smartphones and smart watches as traffic accidents. That's why the devices call 911 emergency services.

This month, 911 services in Summit County, Colorado, have been on high alert. Apple devices often perceived falls while snowboarding and skiing as accidents. Also, false "Crash Recognition" triggers were reported in Utah. There, iPhone 14 smartphones sent three to five alerts to 911 services each day.

Despite this, emergency services do not recommend that skiers turn off Accident Recognition. It's based on a gyroscope and accelerometer, and the algorithm has been trained on simulated crashes. In an iOS 16.2 update, the company fixed the feature as the Apple Watch Ultra, Series 8 and Series SE, as well as the new iPhone 14 smartphones, were sending crash alerts while on a roller coaster ride.
