American company Northrop Grumman officially announced that it is working on the development of an improved radar for the fifth generation fighter F-35 Lightning II. It is called the AN/APG-85.

Here's What We Know

We wrote about the fact that the F-35 is to undergo a major upgrade, which includes the installation of the AN/APG-85, as early as last week. However, Northrop Grumman has just now issued a press release on its official website that talks about the development of the next-generation radar.

The AN/APG-85 is an active phased array radar system. It is intended to replace the AN/APG-81 radar, which is the cornerstone of the fifth-generation fighter's sensor suite. By the way, the APG-81 also has an active phased array antennae.

The AN/APG-85 will be compatible with each of Lockheed Martin's three versions of the aircraft: the F-35A for the U.S. Air Force and export, the F-35B with vertical takeoff and landing, and the deck version of the F-35C. The new radar will allow the fighter to detect and quickly eliminate air and surface targets.

Northrop Grumman says the AN/APG-85 radar integration will help ensure air superiority. The new sensor will offer "unmatched situational awareness in combat space" and "increase the lethality, effectiveness, survivability of aircraft."

The company recalled in a press release that it plays a "key role" in developing, manufacturing, upgrading and supporting the F-35 Lightning II. In addition to the AN/APG-81 and AN/APG-85, it manufactures the aircraft's fuselage center section and wing skin, and produces and maintains avionics and mission planning software. In addition, Northrop Grumman produces software for the pilot and technician training system.
