Tesla falsified autopilot ads - in reality, the car drove into a fence
Tesla has once again found itself in the middle of a scandal. And once again, everything revolves around the operation of the driver assistance system function.
Here's What We Know
Back in 2016, Tesla published a video to demonstrate the capabilities of autopilot in the Model X. The video was used by Ilon Musk. The head of the company wrote that the electric car drives itself through city streets and parks itself.
As it turns out, in reality there is a driver behind the wheel of the Model X electric crossover. Not only that, in 2016, the company's cars did not know how to automatically stop at a red traffic light and continue driving on a green light.
This was reported by Ashok Elluswamy, director of autopilot software. He testified in court against Tesla in a fatal crash that occurred in the spring of 2018. Tesla confirmed that the driver assistance system was on at the time of the accident.
Ashok Elluswamy added that the driver was overriding the vehicle while filming a promotional video. The Model X simply crashed into the guardrail in the parking lot while attempting to park without human intervention. It is also noted that the video was filmed at the request of Ilon Musk.
