French company In & Motion, which specializes in wearable airbags, is developing a smart Stan backpack that will protect the cyclist from injuries and fractures during an accident.

Here's How It Works

It looks like an ordinary backpack of 18 liters in which you can carry a laptop, various gadgets and personal items. But it has an electronic module with various sensors and control equipment, which analyzes the situation 1000 times a second, predicts and detects falls. If the module detects an accident or a fall of a cyclist, it activates the deployment of an airbag.

In fact, In & Motion is not the first company to offer an airbag backpack. But other models are mostly able to protect only the head-neck, while the Stan airbag reliably "envelops" the entire upper half of the body, providing protection for the head, neck, chest, abdomen and spine. In & Motion's goal is to reduce the risk of head injuries by 80% compared to wearing a bicycle helmet as the only protection.

The airbag deploys in less than a tenth of a second after a fall is detected. The backpack also connects via a mobile app to a smartphone, so the system automatically contacts emergency services if the airbag deploys and directs them to the user's GPS coordinates, if necessary.

Stan is still in the development and testing phase, so there is no information on when or how much it will cost.
