Great addition to Leopard 2: German government approves delivery of 88 Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine
A couple of hours ago we wrote that Germany was considering transferring Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine. Now there is information that the country's government has approved the deliveries.
Here's What We Know
The government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit announced this during a press briefing, writes Politico. Hebestreit did not say how many tanks there were, but previously there had been 88 of them. Presumably, the armaments will amount to more than 100 million euros.
Unfortunately, it is not known yet when the tanks will arrive in Ukraine. Incidentally, in addition to the Leopard 1, Germany will also transfer 14 Leopard 2 tanks to the Ukrainian armed forces.
Flashback
The Leopard 1 is Germany's principal battle tank. They began to develop it after World War II in conjunction with France, but then cooperation ceased. The Leopard 1 is in service in 12 countries. Thanks to a modernization program it is still in use. By the way, around 4,744 Leopard 1s were produced by 1984. The tank participated in the Bosnian War as well as in the War in Afghanistan.
