Tesla will build $5bn new platform electric car plant in Mexico, 6 hours from Texas
A few months ago it was reported that Tesla could build a new plant in Mexico. The day before this information was confirmed by president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and during Tesla Investor Day, Elon Musk revealed more details.
Here's What We Know
The new plant will be built in the state of Nuevo Leon, 6 hours drive from the Tesla headquarters in Texas. The facility will assemble electric cars on a new platform. Unfortunately, no data on when production will start is available yet.
Authorities in Mexico said that Ilon Musk's company will invest $5 billion in the construction of the plant and create 5,000-6,000 new jobs. Often sites of this scale require up to 10,000 workers.
In addition, the government hopes that Tesla will be able to set up production of traction batteries for electric cars in Mexico. Authorities have invited Ilon Musk to visit lithium mining facilities, which is needed to create the batteries.
A separate lane with the Tesla logo has appeared at the customs post between Nuevo León and Texas. It is expected to be reserved for vehicles that will deliver components to the plant.
