Sony brings AMD 16% net profit from PlayStation 5
Sony has become the main "net profit provider" for AMD. We have the next generation PlayStation 5 gaming console to thank for that.
Here's What We Know
Despite a very weak 2022 for the industry, Sony and AMD have been doing relatively well. At the end of the last quarter, the former managed to sell a record number of PlayStation 5 game consoles (7.1 million units).
Total console sales from March to December 2022 were 12.8 million units and 38 million units since its release. In addition, Sony hopes to sell 6.2 million units for the current quarter.
Thanks to the great popularity of gaming consoles, Sony will bring in 16% of net profit in 2022. Compared to 2021, the share increased by 2%. Excluding Xilinx, which is owned by AMD, Sony's figure is as much as 20%.
Lisa Su, head of AMD, called the growth in sales of custom processors for gaming consoles "very strong". It's worth noting that AMD is the chip supplier for the Xbox Series S | X as well, but Microsoft accounted for far less sales. According to analyst Sravan Kundojjala, Sony's consoles sold 60% better.
