Canadian man accidentally steals someone else's Tesla Model 3 using the Tesla app
Rajesh Randev, owner of a Tesla Model 3, was able to accidentally steal someone else's car using Elon Musk's company app. And he realised it on the way.
Here's What We Know
Rajesh Randev was in a hurry to pick up his children from school. While on his way, he realised that he was driving someone else's electric car. The incident took place earlier this month.
As it turned out, a similar white Model 3 car was parked next to the Rendezvous. The car owner wasn't confused by the scratch on the windscreen, but later became suspicious when he didn't find a power adapter to recharge his smartphone.
The owner of the stolen electric car turned out to be a resident of Canada named Mahmood. He got his vehicle back after Rendev picked up his children from school. Mahmood was able to contact Rajesh because he found his phone number in the car, which was left in the car park.
Tesla's software enables owners to use their smartphone as a key. The app is tied to a specific vehicle. It can be assumed that Mahmood's Model 3 was unlocked. However, in that case, a mechanism that locks the doors after the owner moves away from the car would have been activated. Tesla has not commented on the incident.
