Ukrainian Armed Forces showcase British AS-90 self-propelled howitzers for the first time
The Ukrainian Defence Forces have received British AS-90 artillery units. The Armed Forces have shown self-propelled howitzers on video for the first time.
Here's What We Know
At the beginning of the year, the UK announced that it would provide Ukraine with 24 AS-90 self-propelled artillery units. The UK later increased the number of guns by more than a third, to 33 units.
The UK itself will not be left empty-handed. The UK Ministry of Defence will buy 14 Archer self-propelled howitzers instead of the AS-90s transferred to Ukraine. The amount of the contract has not been specified yet.
The AS-90 is a British artillery system on a tracked chassis. It was developed by Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering, a division of BAE Syatems. The company has produced a total of around two hundred howitzers, not including prototypes.
The main weapon of the combat vehicle is the 155mm L31 cannon. Maximum firing range is 30 km. In addition to the L31 gun, the howitzer has one L7 machine gun of 7.62 mm caliber.
The AS-90 is equipped with a Cummins VTA903T eight-cylinder diesel engine with a power of 660 horsepower. The combat vehicle can reach a speed of 55 km/h on the highway and has a range of 370 km.
