US defence secretary says when Ukrainian army gets Abrams tanks

This winter, the USA announced that it would hand over Abrams tanks to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Now it is finally known when the equipment will arrive in Ukraine.

When We Can Expect It

According to US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, the transfer of the tanks is scheduled for early autumn. The Pentagon chief explained why he had to wait so long for the armament by saying that the USA would not just hand over the tanks to Ukraine, but would also create an infrastructure for them, which would make it possible to support the equipment. In addition, the Ukrainian military will complete a training programme in the use of Abrams by the autumn.

Flashback

The US announced the transfer of Abrams tanks in the M1A2 modification to Ukraine in January. Later, it became known that the Ukrainian Armed Forces will receive older versions of the M1A1 SA, which is in service with the US Army. This will make it possible to deliver the vehicles this year, rather than 2024 as originally announced.
