Tesla Model Y and Model 3 are the world's best-selling electric cars in 2022
Motor1.com has published its lists of the best-selling electric cars from last year. Expectedly, Tesla models are in the lead. But only two out of four.
Here's What We Know
In 2022, the best-selling electric car was the Tesla Model Y. Sales almost doubled year-on-year to 747,500 units. The Tesla Model 3 is in the second place with 482,200 units (-3% for the year).
China's Wuling Hongguang Mini EV rounds out the top 3. Sales grew by 14% to 443,400 units. The BYD Dolphin showed tremendous growth - +916% compared to 2021.
The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are the only American cars to make the top 10. When it comes to vehicles from the US, the top five best-selling vehicles are the Ford Mustang Mach-E (77,500 units, +41%), Tesla Model X (37,600 units, +951%) and Chevrolet Bolt EUV (32,800 units, +339%).
There is not a single South Korean electric car in the top 10. The most popular was the Hyundai Ioniq 5 with 100,000 units (+121%). If we talk about European cars, only Volkswagen ID.4 made it into the top ten. Its sales reached 175,600 units (+53%), which allowed it to take the sixth place.
